Selling Bee Rules and Eligibility

Note: Selling Bee and Young Entrepreneur Institute reserve the right to update these rules at any time. Every attempt will be made to notify participants of any modification to this document; however it is ultimately the responsibility of Selling Bee participants to stay current with Selling Bee Rules and Regulations by visiting SellingBee.buzz.
  1. Eligibility
    1. Applicant must be in kindergarden through eighth grade.
    2. Applicant must reside in one of the 21 counties of Northeast Ohio (Ashland, Ashtabula, Carroll, Columbiana, Crawford, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Holmes, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas, Trumbull, Wayne).
    3. Applicant's parent or guardian must complete the electronic permission section of the Selling Bee entry form on our website. Entries will be disqualified if parent/guardian permission form is not submitted by April 2, 11:59 p.m.
    4. Video entries must be no longer than 45 seconds. It is recommended that entries be 30 seconds and not less than 15 seconds. File types accepted include mp4, mov, avi, mpg, 3gp, flv, webm, wmv and mkv.
    5. Applicant and his/her parent/guardian must give consent to use of all photographs, audio recordings and video recordings taken of him/her, and all Selling Bee work presented in association with the Young Entrepreneur Institute. All media recordings become the property of the Young Entrepreneur Institute and may be used by the Young Entrepreneur Institute for educational, instructional or promotional purposes in print, broadcast or electronic media formats now existing or in the future created. This includes but is not limited to the video entry submission. There will be no compensation for the use of any photographs, audio or video recordings or any other media.
    6. Applicants may not work in teams. Only single applicant entries will be accepted.
    7. Applicant may not be related to any employee of the Young Entrepreneur Institute.
    8. The deadline for submission is April 2, at SellingBee.buzz at 11:59 p.m.
  2. Business Idea Entry Criteria
    1. Students formulate a business idea. Students are not required to actually start the business. Business ideas may include such things as dog walking, sports coaching, jewelry making, lemonade stands, babysitting, and any other age appropriate business models.
    2. Students submit a 30 second video entry (commercial). In the commercial, students should:
      • Think up a business idea and compete to make the best business pitch. A pitch is the short, catchy thing you say to people to explain your business and persuade them to become your customer.
      • First you'll make up a business idea, something you're excited about, something you do really well, that people would want.
      • Then you'll develop your pitch and make a video of you presenting it. Remember, a pitch is short and catchy, so the video should be no longer than 45 seconds or you will be disqualified--thirty seconds is ideal.
      • Upload your video at SellingBee.buzz by April 2nd to enter for a chance to win cash and great prizes.
      • Your business idea might be selling lemonade, cookies or hand-made jewelry, running a dog walking or babysitting service, or anything else you can think of. Be creative and have fun!
    3. Students will compete on one of two tracks of competition:
      • Kindergarten through 4th Grade
      • 5th- 8th Grade
    4. Applications will be judged on quality of the thinking, overall creativity, and quality of the presentation.
    5. Entries longer than 45:59 seconds will be disqualified.
  3. Prizes Finalists and winners will receive "in-kind" prizes. There is no cash value to "in-kind" prizes and no exchanges or refunds will be offered. Prizes are non transferrable. Only 10 winners will receive a $50 monetary reward.
    1. Forty finalists (Twenty from each competition track) will receive a prize package including:
      • Mitchell's gift card
      • McDonald's gift card
      • Selling Bee stickers
    2. Ten Winners (Four judged from each competition track and one popular vote winner from each competition track) will receive a prize package including:
      • Four pack of Cleveland Indian's baseball tickets (date TBD)
      • $50 Cash
      • Trophy
      • McDonald's gift card
      • Mitchell's Ice Cream gift card
      • Surprise gifts from Microsoft and Cleveland State University

The Competition Consists of Two Rounds

  1. Initial Round—Applicant must submit a short form and video, ideally 30 seconds and no longer than 45 seconds, to SellingBee.buzz. Applicants who do not meet the requirements under the Eligibility section or submit incomplete applications will automatically be disqualified. Forty finalists (Twenty from each track) will be selected from all eligible entries meeting the Selling Bee contest rules and requirements.
    • All applicants must enter using the registration form on SellingBee.buzz. Applicant will receive a confirmation email from SellingBee.buzz. The contest window opens February 14, 2017.
    • Electronic submission: Selling Bee entries must be submitted via the submission link on the website by 11:59 p.m. on April 2, 2017 at SellingBee.buzz.
    • Entries will be disqualified if Parent/Guardian Permission Form is not submitted by April 2, 2017 at SellingBee.buzz at 11:59 p.m.
    • Title and description of idea must be submitted in the form provided on our website.
    • Each first round submission will be reviewed and judged according to:
      1. Quality of thinking
      2. Quality of presentation
      3. Overall creativity
    • Forty finalists (Twenty from each track) will be selected by the judges to participate in the final round. Notification will be provided by April 15, 2017.
  2. Final Round
    • Forty finalists (twenty from each track) will be showcased for voting on SellingBee.buzz from April 15 through April 23, 2017. Eight winners (four from each track) will be determined by an expert panel of judges from the youth entrepreneurship ecosystem in Northeast Ohio. Two additional winners (one per track) will be determined by the highest popular vote. The public may register to vote at www.SellingBee.buzz. The public may vote only once for each candidate, but may vote for as many candidates as they like on both tracks between April 12 and April 18, 2017. If a popular vote winner is also judge selected, the next judge selected winner will make the top six within a track. All decisions are final.
    • All finalists will be notified on April 28, 2017 whether they have been selected as one of ten winners (for each track four selected by judges and one popular vote).
    • All ten winners will be acknowledged on www.SellingBee.buzz. Prize packages will be awarded at a location/time to be announced.

Selling Bee Judges

[h2]Emily Bean[/h2] beanMs. Bean joined Burton D. Morgan Foundation in 2014 as a Program Officer. Prior to her arrival, Ms. Bean worked as a community investment officer for Akron Community Foundation, where she managed the grant distribution process and served as the point of contact between the foundation and its current and potential grantees. Emily received her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Kent State University and earned a Master's Degree in Human Development from Kent State University's Graduate School of Education, Health, and Human Services.
[h2]Melany Castro[/h2] castroMelany Anastasia Castro is the Community Development Specialist at the Beachwood Place Microsoft Store. A recent graduate of Cleveland State University with degrees in Political Science and International Relations, Melany has brought her passion for technology with her throughout her career. After honing her skills selling and fixing computers, Melany now focuses on bringing Microsoft's hardware and software to the Greater Cleveland area through extensive community outreach and programming. Altogether, Melany's work with Microsoft has resulted in over 200 hours of volunteerism and has impacted countless Cleveland youth. In addition to her interest in technology, Melany has focused much of her time on Latin American studies and continues to take Spanish lessons on the weekends.
[h2]Jessica Hakes, M.A. Ed[/h2] hakesJessica is an Academic Advisor in the College of Business at Cleveland State University. She received her undergraduate degree from Ohio Northern University and my graduate degree from Baldwin Wallace University. In her free time she likes to bake.
[h2]William Holdipp Jr.[/h2] williamWilliam Holdipp Jr. is the Executive Director of the Consortium of African American Organizations (CAAO). William is a firm believer that everyone should have access to opportunities and the importance of reaching back to help others. He has dedicated his talents and training to helping others. Born and raised on the island of Bermuda, his passion for helping others came about in his early 20's when he was volunteering for Amnesty International, a human rights organization. During this time, William had the opportunity to advocate for people around the world that were suffering from various human right violations. William eventually got more involved with Amnesty International when he joined the board of AI Bermuda. During this time, William got the opportunity to organize international campaigns for various countries including Cuba, China, Sierra Leone, and the United States. In his role as Interim Executive Director of CAAO, William oversees the various areas including marketing, fundraising, program development, recruiting of member organizations, HR management, and accounting for the organization. Among his notable accomplishments includes being part of an international selection committee to hire an Executive Director for the Caribbean region of Amnesty International, graduating from Bermuda College, founding member of the Tibet Interest Group of Bermuda, graduating from Cleveland Bridge Builders and Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland. William is also a published author with Smart Business Cleveland Magazine. Mr. Holdipp currently serves on various committees in Cleveland which includes the Global Cleveland African American Committee (Vice Chair), Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland Alumni Committee (Co-Chair), and the Cleveland State Diversity Advisory Group. William is also a certified life coach working with people from the various neighborhoods in Cleveland.
[h2]Ethan Holmes[/h2] holmesEthan Holmes is the Founder/CEO of Holmes Mouthwatering Apple Sauce. Ethan Holmes is an 22 year old senior at Hiram College, business management major with a minor in entrepreneurship and Founder/CEO of "Holmes Mouthwatering Applesauce." Holmes started this company at the age of 15 years old after reading "Reallionaire" The inspiring story of Farrah Gray, an African American boy who made a million dollars at 14 years old through his own food product. The remarkable story inspired Ethan at that age to start his own legitimate company. Holmes chose applesauce because his grandfather being the cook of the household taught him his applesauce recipe. He then spent hours over the next few months, refining the recipe and carefully crafting what would one day become "Holmes Mouthwatering Applesauce." "I looked at the market as a 15 year old kid and saw that the majority of the applesauce products in the USA for kids had a bland sugary taste to most of their products. My mission was to create a product that was made up of every quality the big applesauce companies lack, while still maintaining healthy, local and all natural ingredients." Ethan Holmes has been featured in Black Enterprise Magazine, The Plain Dealer, FOX 8 News, PBS, and more!
[h2]Jarryd Huntley[/h2] JarrydHuntleyJarryd Huntley, a Coding Bootcamp Instructor at We Can Code IT, is a Cleveland area technologist who has been working in IT for nearly a decade. After graduating with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Akron he has worked at a number of local enterprises, as well as startups. He enjoys volunteering at a number of local meetup groups and special events. He also plays important roles in Cleveland's growing game development scene as both an academic by teaching game development at Lorain County Community College and as an independent game developer through his newly formed game studio, currently working on Art Club Challenge. He had game development speaking engagements a number of at expos including GDEX and the IndieCade Festival. In addition he is co-authoring his first book, Game Programming for Artists, set to release in 2017.
[h2]Lesley Koskey[/h2] koskeyLesley Koskey is an Academic Advisor in the Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State University. She has been with CSU since January 2013 and works mostly with accounting and finance students. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Strategic Communication & Marketing at The Ohio State University and a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration at the University of Pittsburgh. Lesley loves working in education because no two days are ever alike and her students constantly inspire her to never stop learning!
[h2]Mel McGee[/h2] MelMel's knowledge of the IT industry and over 20 programming languages serves as a launchpad to motivate, mentor, and educate students in computer science and engineering. Her main objectives are to add fun & increase diversity in computer science. Her company, We Can Code IT, concentrates on motivating, mentoring, and educating those from low to moderate incomes in computer science and engineering. We Can Code IT's progressive, collaborative coding boot camp approach trains adults to program and helps find them lucrative careers in IT in months, not years.
[h2]Alex Mulac[/h2] mulacAlex is an academic advisor in the Undergraduate Programs and Student Services office in the Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State University. She earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland and earned her master's degree in Higher Education from Kent State University. In her free time, she loves to play and coach softball.
[h2]Anne Nelson[/h2] nelsonAnne Nelson is the assistant dean of undergraduate programs and student services of the Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State University. Nelson is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for generating and maintaining enrollment for all College undergraduate academic programs and working with faculty to enhance the business education curriculum; oversees the College's undergraduate student engagement services from leading the Undergraduate Academic Advisement Office, to creating career development - exploration programs, and administering the College's Scholarship Program and Petitions – Academic Standard Program. In addition, she supports and develops funding opportunities to enhance student engagement programs and scholarship needs. Currently, undergraduate enrollment has grown by 7 to 10 percent each year over the last three years. Previous to her promotion as assistant dean in 2013, Nelson held several positions at Cleveland State University. In 2008, Nelson joined the College of Business as an academic advisor for undergraduate students was promoted in 2010 to assistant director of undergraduate programs and advising. Nelson has developed many initiatives to help the College of Business undergraduate programs grow and provide innovative student engagement programs. Listed below is a brief list of some of those initiatives:
  • In spring 2013, she proposed and developed the General Business BBA Online Degree Completion Program for adult students (fall 12)
  • Creation of the Business Freshman Leadership Scholarship – gift students yearly to stay on track and finish in four or five years
  • Co-designed with two faculty members three business based General Education courses for students outside the College of Business
  • Created the Business Professional Mentorship Program (fall 2013) – won the President's Excellence in Diversity Award.
  • Redesigned the scholarship process and developed an entire online scholarship process with direct communication to applicants. *Process has now been adopted by three other Colleges at Cleveland State University due to the success of new process.
  • Created the Freshmen & Sophomore Association. An estimated 96 percent of the members maintained a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Developed the first ever Business Internship and Co-Op Expo (fall 2014) – Over 30 employers attended and more than 350 students attended the program.
  • Created KeyBank Day, Women in Business Program and the Banking Industry and Workforce Symposium
  • Facilitated workshops regarding: Study Skills, Career Readiness and Career Engagement
In 2006, during Nelson's time with the CSU First Year Experience Office she created the Focus Center, the first ever CSU academic support resource center designed to assist CSU first year students with the challenges that many college students face with the adjustment to college life. The success of the Focus Center lead to a newly created fulltime position of Coordinator for the Center and Anne served in this position from 2005 to 2007. Also, the Focus Center received the 2006 Innovative Higher Education Program Award from the Ohio College Personnel Association. Nelson started her career in higher education at John Carroll University and has served Cleveland State students since 2001. Nelson is active in professional associations related to student affairs, business education, student retention issues and advisement services. She serves on several College of Business and Cleveland State University committees. Also, she has presented her research findings regarding academic advisement, student engagement programs and student retention issues at professional conferences on the national, regional and local level. Nelson graduated from Notre Dame College of Ohio with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and Business. She received a Master's of Education in Adult Learning and Development from Cleveland State University. Finally, Nelson is a proud spirited football fan and loves the Pittsburgh Steelers and has attended three Super Bowls to cheer on her Steelers.
[h2]Jennifer A. Redmon, M.Ed.[/h2] Version 2Jennifer Redmon is currently serving as the Coordinator for Undergraduate Programs and Student Services for the Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State University. She has over nine years of professional experience in academic advising and student services. Prior to working in academic advising, she was a CSU Admissions Recruiter. In that role, she met with prospective first-year and transfer students from Cleveland and the surrounding nine-county area. She has a Master of Education in Adult Learning and Development and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, both from CSU. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and two children, Penelope and James.
[h2]Cecilia H. Render, M.Ed.[/h2] renderCecilia H. Render is the Executive Director of the Nordson Corporation Foundation. She has been at the Foundation since 1999 starting as the Program Officer. Prior to Nordson, Cecilia was employed in the field of education. She is actively involved in the Philanthropy Ohio Education Advisory Committee and Corporate Funders group, ReacHigher, the Lorain County P-16 council and the STEM education workgroup with the Association of Corporate Contribution Professionals. She has worked as an advisor for Cleveland Scholarship Programs and the Educational Opportunity Program at Tri-C. Cecilia has also been a part-time instructor at Cleveland State University in the School of Education. She holds a M.Ed. from CSU with a concentration in Adult Learning and Development and a B.A. in Psychology with a concentration in Child Development from Smith College. Cecilia is the 2015 Leadership Lorain County Eric Nord Award for Excellence in Leadership awardee. She has also just joined the board of Philanthropy Ohio.
[h2]Sarah Rosenberg[/h2] rosenbergSarah Rosenberg is an Academic Advisor at the Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State University. She is a licensed Ohio teacher who has over nine years of experience between K-12 schools and institutions of higher education. She completed her B.A. in English Literature from Seton Hill University and her M.A.Ed. from Baldwin Wallace University, and she loves working with students of all ages.
